Damon Albarn’s sophomore solo record The Nearer The Fountain, More Pure The Stream Flows is on its way this November. For now though, the Gorillaz and Blur maestro has dropped a new track in ‘Royal Morning Blue’.
Vibrant and confident in its delivery, ‘Royal Morning Blue’ plays with texture and sonic shades strongly. It makes total sense within the rest of Albarn’s output; he’s never been afraid of mixing things up and exploring new soundscapes. ‘Royal Morning Blue’ is possibly the most upbeat cut we’re hearing from The Nearer The Fountain, More Pure The Stream to date.
Written by Albarn in Iceland, ‘Royal Morning Blue’ already has that icy cool edge to it – so it makes sense that the songwriter gained inspo from his surroundings. Says the press release that came with its release, ‘Royal Morning Blue’ was ‘directly inspired by the view from Albarn’s position at the piano looking out over the sea, capturing the wonder of rain turning into snow before his eyes’.
The single follows on from Albarn’s recent releases ‘Particles’, ‘Polaris’ and the album’s title track. And just like those releases, ‘Royal Morning Blue’ has a video to accompany.
Along with the main single release, Albarn’s shared a live performance of ‘Royal Morning Blue’, where he is joined by a nine-piece band for the rendition.
