Britney Spears‘ father Jamie Spears has filed a petition to terminate the court conservatorship that’s controlled his famous daughter’s life and finances for 13 years.
Jamie Spears made the filing in the Los Angeles Superior Court on Tuesday, 7th September, reveals The Hollywood Reporter. In a document seen by the Reporter, the petition from Jamie Spears’ lawyer states that “If Ms. Spears wants to terminate the conservatorship and believes that she can handle her own life, Mr. Spears believes that she should get that chance.”
Britney Spears has been subject to the court conservatorship since 2008. Although the conservatorship was implemented during a period of heightened mental struggle for Spears, the draconian nature of the arrangement has become increasingly apparent in recent years and months.
In July, The New Yorker published a terrific piece of reporting by Ronan Farrow and Jia Tolentino, which exposed the cruelty of the conservatorship and alleged that Jamie Spears had been manipulating his daughter to his own immense financial benefit.
The conservatorship re-entered the public conversation in late June after Britney made an emotional speech in open court. “I just want my life back,” she said. “It’s been 13 years and it’s enough. It’s been a long time since I’ve owned my money and it’s my wish and my dream for all of this to end without being tested.”
It’s up to Judge Brenda Penny to make the next move—the judge will need to approve Jamie Spears’ petition to terminate the conservatorship. In July, Britney was finally given permission to hire her own lawyer, recruiting former federal prosecutor Mathew Rosengart. Rosengart has been firm in his intention to end the conservatorship and stated his number one priority was the removal of Jamie Spears.
We’ll bring you more updates as they come to light.
