In a statement Jordison’s family confirmed his death, sharing that he passed away peacefully in his sleep on July 26th, 2021. No cause of death was named.
“Joey’s death has left us with empty hearts and feelings of indescribable sorrow,” they write.
“To those that knew Joey, understood his quick wit, his gentle personality, giant heart and his love for all things family and music.
“The family of Joey have asked that friends, fans and media understandably respect our need for privacy and peace at this incredibly difficult time.”
The family say they will hold a private funeral service.
Jordison played with Slipknot from its foundation until 2013. At the time he cited “personal reasons” for his departure. In 2016 he revealed his departure from the band was the result of a medical condition, which affected the use of his legs.
“Towards the end of my career in Slipknot I got really, really sick with a horrible disease called transverse myelitis — I lost my legs,” he explained. “I couldn’t play anymore. It was a form of multiple sclerosis, which I wouldn’t wish on my worst enemy.”
Still his departure from the band was mired in controversy with Jordison insisting he did not choose to leave (claiming the band fired him after mistaking his health issues as a drug problem) and frontman Corey Taylor a few years later saying that firing Jordison after 18 years was “one of the hardest decisions” the group ever made, adding that Jordison was “in a place in his life” which is “not where we are.”
Since news of his passing on Monday has circulated, musicians around the world have flooded social media with tributes to Jordison.
This is tragic news. BVB’s first UK tour was a slot opening for Murderdolls and while I never had the chance to talk privately with Joey I was always impressed by his abilities and dedication to his craft. An iconic performer and artist. RIP. https://t.co/kyDdeqolsr

Joey Jordison was better upside down than any other metal drummer sitting normally.

From being able to share the stage with him numerous times throughout the years to Matt standing alongside him for the Roadrunner United album.
